millipedes control

Millipedes, like their cousin the centipede, are not actually insects. They are classified in the phylum Arthropoda and subphylum Myriapoda. Myriapoda literally means “myriad of legs.”

physical characteristics & habitat

Myriapods all have a single pair of antennae, a mouth on the underside of the head and they all prefer to live in moist areas. Millipedes are most likely to be found in flowerbeds and gardens.

They can also be found under piles of vegetation such as dead leaves, grass clippings and mulch. This is because millipedes flourish in soft, damp habitats and they eat dead, organic materials such as leaves and wood fibers.

how millipedes get inside

Millipedes are known to migrate after heavy rain storms and in order to prepare for winter. Millipedes regularly appear on porches during these times, and they are particularly creative at finding entryways into homes.

These can include:

  • crawlspace vents,
  • basement doors and windows,
  • and other unsealed areas such as those with worn or missing weather stripping.

Beetles themselves are an important food source for many different types of animals, including other insects, fish, reptiles and birds.

millipedes love basements!

Millipedes are fond of basements and crawlspaces because they are usually dark and quiet. Storage boxes, and wood scraps and pieces in basements and crawlspaces make such areas especially desirable to millipedes.

capable of overwintering

Millipedes are yet another pest that makes winter service a must in our northern service areas. Millipedes are capable of living for several years. Thus, like other pests who survive harsh climates, they are quite capable of establishing harborage and overwintering inside homes.
