The Loop Parkway is a state parkway located in Suffolk County, New York. It extends from the Southern State Parkway in Bay Shore to Robert Moses Causeway in Babylon.
Loop Parkway was constructed between 1927 and 1937 as part of the Robert Moses project to connect Long Island to New York City via highways and bridges. The highway was originally designed to be a limited-access road, but due to the Great Depression, only the section between Southern State Parkway and Merrick Road was built to that standard. The rest of the highway was built as an at-grade road with traffic signals at intersections.
The Loop Parkway has been redesigned several times since its initial construction. In 1954, the section between Merrick Road and Peninsula Boulevard was upgraded to a limited-access highway. In 1968, the section between Peninsula Boulevard and Robert Moses Causeway was also upgraded to a limited-access highway.
The Loop Parkway is a popular route for commuters traveling to and from Long Island. The parkway is also used by recreational vehicles on weekends. There are several exits along the parkway that provide access to local beaches and parks.
