can animals & insects transmit covid-19?

By proofPest
With the Coronavirus pandemic continuing to be a global and national concern, people across the United States are still taking extra precautions to prevent themselves and their loved ones from catching this deadly disease. By now it has been well-established that the Novel Coronavirus that causes COVID-19 seems mostly to spread through face-to-face contact, in which one person talks to another, spraying droplets that can enter your respiratory system via the nose or mouth. It also appears that some transmission occurs via surfaces, such as when someone touches an area where the virus is present and then touches their face or mouth. There’s one question that’s still the subject of some debate, however: can animals and insects transmit COVID-19?It’s a simple fact that around summertime every year, there is renewed interest in what pathogens may be spread by mosquitos, such as the Zika or West Nile virus. Ticks also tend to be a greater concern during the summer because of the diseases they spread (Rickettsiae, Lyme,) though in warmer climates you have to worry about this year-round. The good news is that according to the CDC, there is no evidence at this time to suggest that the Coronavirus can be spread through mosquito or tick bites. That’s not to say that mosquitoes and ticks aren’t still worth worrying about, as both these insects can still diseases that will put you in the hospital, i.e. the last place you want to be during the summer of COVID-19. In the end, it is best to take the usual precautions you would to prevent mosquito and tick bites, even if you do not have to worry about these species giving you the Coronavirus.

As for animals, it is thought this latest strain of Coronavirus likely came from a bat. However, the CDC has stated that at this time, “there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the virus that causes COVID-19.” There have been a small number of pets that have contracted COVID-19 in the United States and around the world, although these animals were diagnosed with the virus after their owner or another person they interacted with contracted it first. Current research indicates that ferrets, cats, hamsters, and dogs may all become infected with the virus, though dogs are unlikely to spread it amongst their species. Meanwhile, other studies suggest that mice, pigs, chickens, and ducks, are not at risk of becoming infected with or spreading the virus.

Of course, if you get close enough to a mouse where you have to worry about the spread of an infection, you already have a big problem to worry about.
