There’s no shortage of advice online about things bed bugs don’t like: essential oils, dryer sheets, diatomaceous earth, and certain paint colors. The list keeps growing. Some of it has a basis in research. Most of it works poorly in practice, and none of it eliminates an infestation.
What Bed Bugs Actually Respond To
Bed bugs are driven almost entirely by a single goal: finding a host. Everything they do, where they hide, when they move, how they locate you, traces back to that drive. They don’t respond to most environmental conditions the way people assume.
Heat, Light, and Chemical Signals
CO2 is what draws them from a distance. Body heat and skin volatiles take over at close range. They’re nocturnal by preference, not by biology. A warm, occupied room will draw them regardless of light levels.
Repellent sprays on bedding or skin have limited effect because by the time a bed bug is close enough to detect a chemical deterrent, the biological drive to feed is already stronger. Ultrasonic devices and light traps don’t work either. Neither one targets the signals bed bugs are actually using.
Temperatures That Kill Bed Bugs
118°F sustained is the threshold. At that temperature, adults, nymphs, and eggs all die. At 122°F, adults die in under a minute, and eggs within a few minutes. Cold and heat both kill bed bugs, but the exposure requirements make one far more practical than the other.
Exact Temperatures and Exposure Times
Professional heat treatment raises the entire structure to a lethal temperature and holds it there. The heat reaches inside mattresses and walls. It gets through furniture and into the seams of the box spring. There’s no cool pocket to retreat to, which is what makes it different from surface treatment.
Cold is harder to use reliably. Bed bugs die after prolonged exposure to temperatures below 0°F, but most home freezers don’t reach that consistently. A chest freezer verified at 0°F will kill bed bugs in sealed items after several days of continuous exposure.
Putting infested items in a car during winter is unreliable. Temperatures vary too much and the required exposure time is longer than most people expect. This method works in theory but fails in practice for most homeowners.
Heat works at temperatures achievable with professional equipment. Cold works only under controlled conditions with verified temperatures and extended exposure times.
Scents and Substances They Avoid
The gap between what works in a lab and what works in a real infestation is where most repellent claims fall apart. Lab studies expose bed bugs directly to compounds under controlled conditions with no alternative routes available. A real infestation doesn’t work that way. The population is distributed and the bed bugs have options.
Essential Oils, Diatomaceous Earth, and the Limits of Both
Blood orange, spearmint, and paraffin oil have all shown repellent effects on bed bugs in controlled studies. In a lab, bed bugs exposed to these compounds will avoid them.
In a real infestation, the population is spread through mattress seams and box spring fabric. It’s behind baseboards, inside outlet covers, and inside wall voids. Applying a repellent to one surface doesn’t reach any of that. Bed bugs that avoid a treated surface find another route to the host.
Diatomaceous earth works through a different mechanism entirely. The fine particles damage the exoskeleton and cause dehydration over time. Applied correctly in areas with consistent bed bug traffic, it can reduce populations.

These substances can deter or kill individual bed bugs under specific conditions. They can’t eliminate an infestation.
Why Prevention Isn’t Enough
The bed bugs you can see or reach with a surface treatment are a fraction of the population. An established infestation runs through dozens of harboring sites, many of them inside walls or furniture you’d have to dismantle to access. Bed bugs survive months without feeding. A population that gets partially disrupted doesn’t leave. It redistributes and waits.
A female bed bug lays one to five eggs per day, up to 500 in a lifetime. Those eggs are coated in a sticky substance that anchors them to surfaces inside harboring sites, and contact sprays don’t kill them.
By the time an infestation is visible, the egg population has already ensured the next generation. Most people are further behind than they think when they first call for help.
What Only Heat Treatment Can Eliminate
Most chemical treatments can’t penetrate all harboring sites, leaving eggs viable until they hatch in the treated environment.
Multiple applications over several weeks are needed, and results on moderate or heavy infestations are inconsistent for exactly this reason. That gap matters because the egg cycle is what keeps infestations going after partial treatment. Heat closes that gap by killing everything in the treated space at the same time.
The temperature rises throughout the entire space. There’s nowhere to redistribute to. Eggs die at the same temperature as adults. A single properly executed treatment eliminates the entire population, not just the accessible portion.
